Project Overview
Schouten Excavating was selected by the City of Sarnia to complete the
phased reconstruction of Nelson Street between Front Street and
Christina Street. The project modernized aging municipal infrastructure
while maintaining access for local residents and businesses throughout
construction. Despite challenging sandy soils, high groundwater
conditions, and a mid-project management transition, Schouten
successfully delivered the project through proactive planning, effective
communication, and experienced field supervision.
Project Scope:
The reconstruction included the separation of the existing combined
sewer into new sanitary and storm sewer systems, installation of a new 300
mm watermain and property services, reconstruction of the active railway
crossing, and complete roadway restoration. Additional work included
bulk excavation, trenching, granular placement, concrete curb and
sidewalk installation, asphalt paving, drainage improvements, driveway
restoration, boulevard reinstatement, and final landscaping. Construction
activities were carefully phased to minimize disruption while maintaining
safe pedestrian and vehicular access throughout the project.
